Title: Spectral Characterization of Cataclysmic Variables within the Kepler Field of View

Abstract: The NASA Exoplanet mission Kepler is well into its prime mission to detect Earth-size planets in the habitable zone of their host stars. Guest observer science using Kepler is well underway and our team has a program to collect high precision, high cadence light curves of all known cataclysmic variables (CV) within the Kepler field of view. To date, our program is observing 10 cataclysmic variables starting about a year ago and continuing throughout the mission. We propose here to obtain the first spectroscopic measurements for this set of CVs, obtaining orbital solutions for three systems and sampled spectra for the rest. The combination of photometric precision, cadence, and uninterrupted longevity make the Kepler light curves a unique resource. The Kepler data on accreting systems will provide a physical touchstone for modelers with the potential to substantially improve our understanding of the physics of accretion disks once the astrophysical parameters are provided via our spectroscopic program.
