Title: A Census of Embedded Clusters in the Carina Arm

Abstract: We propose to conduct a comprehensive, systematic, deep near-IR JHKs imaging survey for embedded clusters in the Carina Arm using NEWFIRM on the CTIO 4-meter telescope. We will target approximately 300 recently identified massive dense cores located in roughly 30 molecular clouds (Barnes et al 2010). The primary goals of this survey are to determine: (1.) the number and distribution of embedded clusters within each molecular cloud; (2.) cluster properties such as size, number of members, extinction, luminosity function and mass; and (3.) the embedded cluster mass function. The proposed investigation will provide first statistically significant census of the youngest clusters in a single spiral arm of our Galaxy. Further, it will represent the largest and most uniform survey for embedded clusters within GMC cores ever done.
