Title: Exploring the Nature of Extended ChaMPx Sources

Abstract: We propose to use the NOAO/KPNO 2.1m telescope to observe optical counterparts of 11 serendipitously detected \it Chandra extended X-ray sources that lack deep optical coverage. Our deep SDSS \it riz imaging will allow us to; 1) verify the galaxy cluster nature of our extended X-ray sources, 2) estimate photometric redshifts (z\lesssim 1.1) using the location of the cluster red-sequence in the color- magnitude plane, 3) quantify our optical/X-ray cluster detection methods by constraining the optical cluster mass selection function based on a comparison of the cluster X-ray luminosity/temperature with optical richness, and 4) measure cluster characteristics, such as the color- magnitude relation, luminosity function, and various optical/X-ray properties. This proposal will allow us to finish compiling a statistically meaningful sample in which to robustly compare various optical cluster detection schemes with a well-understood X-ray extended source selection technique.
