Title: Testing the Age-Metallicity Relation for the Galactic Disk with CoRoT Red Giants
Abstract: We propose to use a combination of astroseismic data and high- resolution spectroscopic abundances to determine the age-metallicity relation for the Galactic disk. CoRoT and Kepler astereseismology can provide mass, radius, and age information independent of traditional isochrone age measurements. This new technique produces ages accurate to ~15% if it is complemented with abundance information. We are therefore asking for two nights of Keck HIRES time to observe 26 red giants 2-4 kpc away from the Sun that have asteroseismic data from the CoRoT satellite to gain the necessary metallicity and abundance ratio measurements. With these data we will gain a new look at the age- metallicity relation and investigate the Galactic chemical enrichment history - not just of iron, but also (alpha) and heavier elements- with much finer age resolution.
