Title: Spectroscopic Identification of X-ray Binaries in the Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey

Abstract: We propose to obtain spectra of optical counterparts to X-ray sources discovered in the southern half of our Chandra Galactic Bulge survey (CGBS). The CGBS has discovered 1700 X-ray sources, many with optical counterparts. We expect to find 400 neutron star and black hole Low Mass X-ray Binaries, including quiescent and/or eclipsing systems. This plethora of new X-ray sources will constrain binary evolution models by way of a number counts of predicted populations. These objects will also provide a new sample with which to make important neutron star and black hole mass measurements. For all of these goals we need to classify the sources via optical spectroscopy. We here propose to obtain Gemini-S/GMOS spectra for 20 sources in the Southern half of the Bulge with 20 < r' < 23 that cannot be accomodated by complementary VLT multi-object spectroscopy.
