Title: Extending Deep Wide H(alpha) Galaxy Surveys to Higher Redshift with NEWFIRM

Abstract: We propose to complete our NEWFIRM campaign to extend H(alpha) galaxy surveys to higher redshift. Our survey identifies emission-line galaxies using custom narrowband filters which sample low airglow windows in the near-IR. The requested observations form the foundation of a unique program that will comprehensively characterize the properties of a deep, complete sample of intermediate redshift emission- line galaxies, by leveraging a full range of optical and near-IR imagers and spectrographs, in both ``shallow-wide'' and ``narrow-deep'' observational modes. Our H(alpha)-selected dataset enables a host of basic studies from the determination of robust H(alpha) luminosity functions and star formation rate (SFR) volume densities, to measurement of the Ly(alpha) escape fraction. The first phase of the survey targeted H(alpha) at z=0.8 and was carried out in 07B and 08B. In 09B, we were awarded time to perform the second phase of the survey, which is designed to detect ~300 H(alpha) emitters at z=2.2 and probe observed SFRs to ~0.4L^*(~8 h_70^-2 M_\odot yr^-1). However, only 25% of the requisite data were obtained due to weather. Our re- submitted 2010B proposal to complete the program was ranked highly, but was not awarded time due to the unavailability of space in the camera for our two filters. We are thus re-submitting our proposal.
