Title: Cosmic Explosions: Census, Systematics, and Beyond
Abstract:
We propose an ambitious spectroscopic investigation of the full
spectrum of core collapse supernovae (CCSNe). By pursuing spectra of
the most complete possible sample of Palomar Transient Factory (PTF)
discovered CCSNe over the 2011A (a continuation of our 2010B program) --
over 200 events in all -- we will carry out the first unbiased census of
core collapse populations, confront the impact of stellar metallicity
and progenitor mass loss on CCSN properties, and identify and
characterize newly-discovered and rare subpopulations of CCSN in detail.
In addition, the large sample is likely to yield (as appears to be the
case) exotic events and clarify the origins of rare sub-classes of
explosions.
