Title: An Imaging Survey for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment

Abstract: The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) is a Stage III program to study the evolution of Dark Energy using the power- spectrum of 1.9 < z < 3.5 Ly(alpha) emitting galaxies (LAEs). This survey, which will begin in 2012, will use an extremely large integral- field unit to obtain R ~ 800 spectra between 3500 Aand 5500 Aover 420 deg^2 of sky (filling factor 1/7). Since whatever falls in the instrument's 34,000 1\farcs 5 diameter fibers will be recorded, the project will generate a unique unbiased spectral database of ~ 800,000 LAEs, ~ 1,000,000 [O II] emitters, ~ 25,000 AGN, ~ 250,000 foreground stars, and ~ 400,000 other objects. We propose to use the Mosaic camera on the KPNO 4-m telescope to perform a g,r survey of 40 deg^2 of the HETDEX strip. These observation will allow HETDEX to discriminate LAEs from foreground [O II] sources, and, when combined with the HETDEX spectra, generate an invaluable database for the astronomical community. Projects that can be done with the data range from probing the history of star-formation as a function of environment, to examining the processes of cluster formation, to measuring the frequency of extremely metal-poor halo stars.
