Title: The multi-wavelength Fundamental Plane in the Fornax Cluster
Abstract:
While the Fundamental Plane (FP) is a key constraint on the
evolution of early-type galaxies, there are unresolved questions in both
the interpretation of the FP and in the measurements of the FP
parameters themselves. These issues can be addressed by moving from
optical to near-infrared (NIR) observations. We are well underway with
constructing the first ever all-NIR FP, with the task remaining to
assemble a matched set of homogeneous optical data for direct
comparison. We propose here using the CTIO Y4KCam for the necessary
optical photometry. The NIR-optical comparison will allow us to look
for systematic trends with wavelength and to investigate the driving
mechanisms for the tilt and the thickness of the fundamental plane.
