Title: Investigating the Connection Between Green Fuzzy Emission and Molecular Outflows
Abstract:
?Green Fuzzies? are extended sources with enhanced emission in Spitzer?s
4.5um IRAC filter (which people generally false-color as green when making
3-color images from Spitzer data). They have recently been linked to outflows
from massive young stellar objects. It has been speculated that the enhanced
emission in green fuzzies is due to CO in these outflows emitting at 4.6um.We
propose NIRI long slit K, L, and M-band spectroscopic observations of two
bright green fuzzies that have prominent mm CO outflows co-located with the
green fuzzy emission. The proposed observations will allows us to determine
if CO emission in the NIR can be a major contributor to the 4.5um enhancement
in green fuzzies. More importantly, the proposed observations will also allow
us to determine the physical conditions of the gas exciting the green fuzzy
emission, and compare them to models that have been recently proposed to
explain green fuzzy emission. The observations, reduction, and interpretation
are very simple and straightforward. The sources are expected to be bright in
their line emission, and observations can be done in less-than-optimal
conditions.
