Title: Analysis of Early Dust Formation in SNe with Strong CSM Interaction

Abstract: Past studies of Type II SNe have revealed evidence of dust formation in the ejecta approximately 300-600 days after explosion. However, the mass of dust synthesized is several orders of magnitude less than that needed to explain observed dust quantities at high-z. Recent studies of SNe exhibiting strong circumstellar interaction have found evidence of dust formation as early as 50 days after explosion and have suggested that this new mechanism may condense more dust than typical core-collapse SNe. We propose a ToO program to obtain early time (50-200d) optical imaging and spectroscopy with GMOS-N, along with near- and mid- infrared photometry using NIRI and Michelle, to investigate the mechanism for early dust formation in CSM-interacting SNe. The proposed observations will be a vast improvement over previous studies that had very limited temporal and wavelength coverage, allowing us to test the suggestion that these early-dust-forming SNe are producing significantly more dust and, therefore, are a viable explaination for the large quantities of dust observed in the early universe. Given the past discovery frequency of suitable targets (one per month), we antcipate our ToO will be triggered near the beginning of the 2010B semester.
