Title: Mid-IR Observations of EPOXI Mission Target Comet 103P/Hartley 2
Abstract: We propose to observe 103P/Hartley with Gemini-N (+Michelle) during the EPOXI rendezvous (2010 Nov 04 UT) to obtain 10/20 \micron images and spectra to: (1) characterize dust grains released into the coma from the highly-processed nuclear surface; (2) assess whether coma grain properties change with (a) cometocentric distance (e.g., fragment), and (b) as the comet rotates (e.g., distribution of jets); (3) investigate whether grains are the carriers of distributed sources; and (5) support the potential discovery of PAHs by EPOXI in the 3 \micron window during rendezvous by covering the 8.6, 11.25, and 12.5 micron PAH bands.
