Title: Comprehensive statistics of multiple stars
Abstract:
Formation of binary and multiple stars remains a subject of active
work where progress has been achieved recently through large-scale
hydrodynamical simulations. Reliable statistics of multiplicities
higher than two are still missing for comparisons with theory. We will
establish the true fractions of triple and quadruple systems in the
nearby stellar population and derive un-biased distributions of their
periods and mass ratios. The input catalog of 5040 stars is based on
Hipparcos. A subset of this sample (southern visual and spectroscopic
binaries) will be monitored in radial velocity to cover the parameter
space missed by other surveys. Final results will be obtained by
invoking other published data and by complementary observations with
adaptive optics.
