Title: Ly(alpha) Emitting Galaxies at z=2.1: Characterizing the Progenitors of Typical Present-day Galaxies

Abstract: We propose to augment our successful survey for Lyman Alpha Emitters (LAEs) at z=2.1 by adding deep NB3727A MOSAIC imaging of the MUSYC- CW1255 field that will allow us to complete a sample of ~ 1000 LAEs at z=2.1. Clustering analysis of the LAEs at z=2.1 and z=3.1 implies that they are the progenitors of present-day ~ L^* galaxies. The current results come from a single field, so we have expanded our survey for z=2.1 LAEs to cover the four MUSYC fields totaling 1.2 square degrees. We have already imaged three of these fields in NB3727A and are proposing here to complete the survey. The addition of MUSYC-CW1255 is necessary to reduce uncertainties due to ``cosmic variance'' and to constrain the bright end of the luminosity function. We will also analyze the multiwavelength properties of the z=2.1 sample (in direct analogue to our published analyses at z=3.1) in order to study the evolution of this low-mass, nearly dust-free population of starbursting galaxies. We will make our reduced images and catalogs available to the community upon publication.
