Title: Near-IR Spectroscopy of AGN from the SWIFT BAT Survey

Abstract: The SWIFT hard X-ray survey represents a unique sample of 256 AGN unaffected by galactic or circumnuclear absorption. This survey detects many new AGN not found by optical emission line or soft X-ray methods. We propose to investigate those AGN with mismatched Seyfert 1 and 2 classifications based on optical emission line widths and X-ray column densities. We also propose a near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopic study of a small number, ~10, of these AGN that have high quality optical spectra that are not classified as AGN and have a low O[III] to hard X- ray luminosity ratio to search for the presence of dust in the NIR. The NIR region includes unique signatures of nuclear emission, star formation, and reddening that are less affected by extinction allowing us to solve these discrepancies.
