Title: Optical/NIR Studies of South Pole Telescope Galaxy Clusters and Point Sources

Abstract: We request Blanco ISPI and Mosaic2 time to acquire deep multiband imaging of 71 additional South Pole Telescope SZE selected galaxy clusters and 55 SPT point sources. These images will enable us to complete the followup of the current season of observations for the SPT cluster samples by (1) confirming them as galaxy clusters, (2) measuring their redshifts, (3) imaging potential z>1 systems that are not readily apparent in multiband optical followup, (4) selecting systems for more detailed optical spectroscopic, weak lensing and X-ray studies and (5) studying the galaxy populations and their redshift evolution, as well as (1) investigating the effect of SPT point sources in SZE cluster finding. This additional sample comes from an analysis of the multi-frequency SPT maps in a deep, 190 deg^2 survey region located at (alpha)=21hr, (delta)=-60^\circ. We focus on a S/N>4.5 subsample of clusters, which has low contamination indicated by mock observations and initial optical followup with a corresponding mass threshold of M~5\times10^14M_\odot estimated from the X-ray observations. Multiband optical/NIR followup of these systems is the crucial next step that will enable characterization of the SPT selected cluster sample and their use in studies of structure formation and cosmology.
