Title: The origin of S0 discs in the dense cluster environment

Abstract: Various mechanisms have been proposed to account for the large population of S0 galaxies observed in the cores of local rich clusters. While the transformation of spirals into S0s via star formation quenching is the favoured model, the process for removal or exhaustion of gas is unknown. Stellar population studies are a powerful diagnostic tool to investigate such mechanisms, but have been largely limited to the bulge-dominated cores of S0s. In program GN-2009A-Q-52, we were allocated 36 hours (band-2) for GMOS spectroscopy, to study 12 edge-on S0s in the Coma cluster. Six galaxies were observed. Here, we propose to complete the original sample and augment it with three additional S0s in the dense cluster core. By determining the age, metallicity and [alpha/Fe] for both bulge and disc components of cluster S0s that lie in a range of densities, we will investigate the effect of local environment on the formation processes.
