Title: Properties of high proper motion white dwarfs
Abstract:
White dwarfs are the primary end-products of stellar evolution.
Studies of their mass, radius and surface composition help establish
physical links between main-sequence progenitors and white dwarfs. A
complete, unbiased, local sample of white dwarfs is essential to
determine these population properties. We have selected a sample of
white dwarf candidates based on their proper motion and colors. We
propose to obtain high signal-to-noise spectroscopy of these white dwarf
candidates in order to determine their atmospheric properties, chemical
composition, effective temperature, and surface gravity. These results
will expand our knowledge of the local sample of white dwarfs and allow
us to determine their kinematical properties which will help in
establishing their Galactic population membership.
