Title: Complete census of wide companions to nearby stars
Abstract:
Many potential binary companions to nearby stars are found in the
2MASS survey, but most of them are chance projections. The status of
300 companion candidates within 20 arcsec from a carefully selected
large sample of nearby solar-type dwarfs will be determined by a 2-nd
epoch imagery at the 1.3-m telescope. This will lead to the robust
determination of the companion mass function down to the hydrogen-
burning limit in the separation range from 500 to 1000 AU. The aim is
to complement adaptive-optics studies of low-mass stellar and sub-
stellar companions at smaller separations and to provide reference data
for the binary-formation theories.
