Title: Groups around Groups: Multi-Object Spectroscopy of Hickson Compact Groups

Abstract: We propose to continue to assemble a sample of 12 Hickson Compact Groups (HCGs), adding 5 in S09B, representing a crucial \lq missing link\rq in galaxy evolution and hierarchical structure formation and closely reproducing intermediate redshift conditions. Although the cores (up to a few hundred kpc), are relatively well-studied, much less work has been done on larger (Mpc) scales. We have a newly assembled large, combined, UV, IR and optical dataset on such larger scales, but this \it must be complemented by optical spectroscopic data for membership information. We will use the CTIO 4m Hydra instrument to measure redshifts for many faint dwarf galaxies. We will also measure star-formation histories combining information from all these wavebands, including spectroscopic coverage at H(alpha) for many of the brighter galaxies where it is currently lacking. Our proposed observations will thus allow both unprecedented characterization of the brighter galaxies and unambiguous identification of new low-luminosity members. The substantially higher total number of group members will provide accurate velocity dispersions and, hence, total group masses.
