Title: Expanding Herbig Ae/Be Multiplicity Survey to Southern Hemisphere
Abstract:
We propose to use NICI on Gemini South to expand our successful multiplicity
study to the southern hemisphere. Using NIRI+Altair on Gemini North, we have
surveyed a large number of northern Herbig Ae/Be stars (143) and detected
likely companions around approximately 2/3 of them. This work has increased
the known companion sample by nearly a factor of 10, and uncovered several
unique and interesting systems. Identifying and understanding companions to
intermediate mass pre-main sequence stars enlightens our understanding of
star formation as a function of mass (the primaries span 1.5-10 solar
masses), and as a function of immediate stellar environment.
