Title: The Structure of Mass Loss from Massive Stars
Abstract: We propose to make a survey of the mass outflows and nebulae surrounding four massive star targets: the interacting binary systems RY Scuti and (beta) Lyr, the luminous blue variable star P Cygni, and the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136. The structure and kinematics of the outflows in these systems will be measured using integral field spectroscopy of the He I (lambda) 10830 emission line. These Gemini North / NIFS observations will show the importance of binary-related tidal forces, large scale wind shocks, and wind clumping in regions close to the star where their imprint sculpts the geometry and velocity of mass loss.
