Title: Engineering Tests and Initial Calibration of DECam CCDs
Abstract: We request time to perform testing and photometric calibration of the Dark Energy Survey CCDs. Specifically, we will again deploy a direct imaging CCD system to the CTIO/Yale/SMARTS 1m telescope. The detector will be identical to the CCDs that will eventually be used in the Dark Energy Camera; we will also use a version of the Monsoon controller that will be similar to what will be deployed with DECam. The goals are to provide on-sky testing of the CCD system, which tests controller and CCD properties generally, and obtain early information on the photometric calibration of DES filters. We have had time over the past few semesters for initial testing and deployment of the system. Unfortunately, technical problem prevented any useful data collection for the first run in April 2008. A second run took place in October 2008 that was very successful: we obtained substantial data on water- band ( 945nm) absorption variability that helped to define DES filter properties, demonstrated that the DECam CCDs are indeed incredibly efficient in the far red, and generally confirmed other detector properties. We have another run in June 2009 that will use the first to use a DECam version of the Monsoon controller and filters with DES grizy filter bandpasses.
