Title: Star Forming Galaxies in the Field of the UV Bright QSO HE2347-4342

Abstract: One of the commissioning observations for the \it Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) on HST will be a new absorption spectrum of the \lya transition in singly-ionized helium for the z=2.885 QSO HE2347- 4342, with a significant S/N improvement over existing UV data. With optical data, this will give a very accurate sightline map of the fluctuating \heii to \hi column density ratio (\eta), which directly corresponds to the softness of the ionizing radiation field. Here we propose GMOS-S photometry to be combined with future follow-up multi- object spectroscopy to determine \underlinedirectly whether specific \eta variations correspond with star-forming galaxies or AGN, i.e. soft or hard ionizing sources, in the quasar field.
