Title: Constraints on the formation of the halo of dwarf galaxies
Abstract: The stellar content of extended halo-like structure surrounding nearby galaxies can provide important insight on the formation and evolution of galaxies. We propose to collect deep photometry of selected fields in the halo of the LMC, to derive accurate life-time star formation histories. This will allow us to quantify the distribution of ages and metallicities of the stellar populations in the LMC halo. This will help to understand the nature of the halo of low mass, late type galaxies, whether it consists of a pure old, metal poor component, analogue to the halo of the Milky Way, or rather it is a mixture of populations with different ages and chemical compositions. The selected fields will sample galactocentric distances from 9 to 20^\circ, therefore disclosing possible radial population gradients.
