Title: New Milky Way Satellites: Survival of the Densest
Abstract: We propose observations with the KPNO 4m + MOSAIC imager to obtain deep color-magnitude data of regions around Segue 2, the most recently discovered ultra-low luminosity Milky Way satellite, as well as follow- up data on seven new satellite candidates identified with new SDSS-III (SEGUE and BOSS) data. We plan to observe Segue 2 in a 4\times 4 mosaic in order to study its association with a superposed stellar stream detected kinematically, and to look for structural evidence of tidal disruption within Segue 2 itself. We plan 2\times 2 mosaics for each of the seven new satellite candidates, in order to determine their nature (e.g., dwarf galaxies, star clusters, false-positives) and to study their morphologies out to angular radius ~ 0.5 degrees. Those confirmed as new dwarf galaxies will be among the least luminous (M_V >=-8.0) galaxies known at \textitany redshift and will provide laboratories for studying the physics of galaxy formation at extremely small scales.
