Title: Calibrating The Metallicity Sensitivity of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relation at Near-Infrared Wavelengths
Abstract:
We are proposing to undertake the first test for and calibration of
the metallicity sensitivity of the Cepheid Period-Luminosity relation in
the near-infrared. From the ground and from space several groups are
mounting major efforts to recalibrate the extragalactic distance scale
using K-band observations of Cepheids. By observing Cepheids in M33 at
different radii, sampling different metallicities, we will be able to
calibrate the sensitivity of the zero point of the Cepheid PL relation
to metallicity in the K band. This will directly address one of the
largest remaining systematics in the near-infrared Cepheid distance
scale.
