Title: Post-Outburst Dust Formation in Warm Hypergiant Rho Cassiopeiae
Abstract: We propose to observe the eruptive yellow hypergiant Rho Cassiopeiae with the low-resolution 10 micron grating using the Michelle instrument on Gemini North. This peculiar supergiant star reveals very exceptional spectral properties. The proposed Michelle observation will provide a unique opportunity to record expected changes of \rho Cas's mid-IR spectral energy distribution following the massive outburst event of the cool hypergiant in 2000-2001. For the first time we may detect silicate dust expected to condense out of the gas phase in a shell expelled during the outburst. The observation will be crucial for understanding whether or not winds in intermediate cool supergiants can be driven by radiation pressure on dust.
