Title: Star Formation in the Bullet Cluster
Abstract: We propose to use IMACS on the Magellan (Baade) telescope to obtain spectra for approximately 200 galaxies in the field of the Bullet Cluster that are MIPS sources consistent with being blue cluster members. The primary objective of our program is to study the distribution of star formation within this cluster, as probed by both 24(micron) luminosity and H(alpha) emission. The Bullet Cluster is a supersonic (Mach 3) cluster merger in which the lower mass subcluster passed through the core of the main cluster within the past 0.15 Gyr. In previous work we have used a statistical approach to assess the impact of this shock upon star formation in cluster galaxies. The proposed observations will improve this analysis by providing redshifts of star-forming galaxies near the shock, and enable us to look at the distribution of star formation out to the viral radius.
