Title: Echoes of Historical Supernovae in the Milky Way Galaxy

Abstract: We propose to search for echoes of the original light from historic Galactic supernovae (SNe) to enable follow-up spectroscopy and determine the nature and properties of the closest examples of these important events. In previously granted NOAO time, we began to obtain images of regions of significant dust concentration near these Galactic SNRs. To date we have found the echoes from the Cas A supernova of 1680 and the Tycho supernova of 1572 \citeRest08b. We ask for more observing time to find light echoes associated with the SNRs SN1006, Kepler's SN, and RCW 86. The study of scattered-light echoes from galactic SNe provides a host of newly-recognized observational benefits which have only just begun to be exploited including: the capacity to understand the connection between remnant properties and the outburst spectral type, access to observables related to asymmetric explosion properties, and a Galactic network of absolute distance differences.
