Title: Unveiling The Red Proto-cluster Population at z=2.3

Abstract: We propose 7 nights of NEWFIRM medium-band imaging observations in the HS1700+643 field, which contains a significant galaxy over-density at z=2.30. As part of an extensive multi-wavelength imaging and spectroscopic campaign, we have spectroscopically confirmed ~ 150 z~ 2 UV-selected star-forming galaxies in this field, and find significant differences in their stellar populations as a function of large-scale environment. A full characterization of the relationships between star-formation history and environment in this truly unique field is currently lacking, however, since our spectroscopic sample is limited (by existing technology) to star-forming galaxies with relatively blue rest-frame UV/optical colors. Combined with optical and IR broad-band photometry already in place, our proposed NEWFIRM observations will yield photometric redshift uncertainties of (Delta)(z)/(1+z) ~eq 0.02 for red galaxies in the HS1700 field, which will allow us to determine which objects are proto-cluster members. Accordingly, we will characterize the stellar populations and environments for the full range of z~ 2 galaxy SEDs in the HS1700 field, with special attention to the emergence of the proto-cluster red sequence, and the distribution of massive proto-cluster galaxies on the large scales probed by NEWFIRM.
