Title: K-band photometry of XTE J1118+480 in Quiescence
Abstract: IR photometry of quiescent black hole X-ray novae (XRNe) has been used extensively to constrain the compact object mass, under the assumption that the flux from the accretion disk is negligible in, for example, the K-band. However, we have recently shown that this is not the case for the well studied black hole system GRO J0422+32, significantly affecting previous mass estimates. Here we propose high resolution K-band photometry of the halo XRN XTE J1118+480, to ascertain the dilution of the K-band flux by the accretion disk. As this system is at a significantly higher inclination than GRO J0422+32 (~ 70\deg compared to ~ 30\deg), these observations will allow us to constrain the effect of the accretion disc contamination on the measured binary inclination.
