Title: Measuring Winds from Galaxies using Absorption in Pairs of QSOs

Abstract: We are using a new method to measure the amount of gas flowing out of galaxies in high velocity winds. We measure the small-scale clustering of QSO metal line absorption systems in 3D. We find that when one QSO shows an absorption system, the spectrum of a second QSOs near in the sky often shows another absorption system within 200 km/s. Since they are separated by a few hundred kpc in the sky, the absorbers are gas in different galaxy halos and they sample small-scale galaxy clustering. The redshift-space distribution of our existing sample of 23 pairs of C IV absorbers shows tight clustering, with little room for the velocity smearing from fast winds. We can already rule out most absorption arising in winds flowing out from galaxies at 250 km/s. We will obtain new spectra to double the sample and test the claim of Adelberger et al 2005 that 1/3 of all QSO absorbers arise in winds from Lyman break galaxies. We may find instead that most winds do not leave the galaxies.
