Title: Mapping the Nearby Universe: The 2MASS Redshift Survey

Abstract: In 2004 we completed an all-sky, flux-limited redshift survey of 23,000 galaxies with K_s<11.25 mag and |b|>10^\circ based on the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) Extended Source Catalog. This survey has yielded the best density field of the local Universe ever obtained within cz=15,0000 km/s and has served as the basis for completed and on-going studies of the peculiar velocity field, galaxy biasing, luminosity functions, clustering statistics, and near-infrared properties of galaxies. The survey represents an improvement of more than an order of magnitude over previous ones, not only in the number of objects but also in the uniformity of the selection criteria and completeness in sky coverage. Over the past four years, we have obtained additional redshifts and have doubled the size of the sample to 43,900 galaxies with K_s < 11.75 mag and |b| > 5^\circ. We are currently missing 370 redshifts in the southern sky to complete the sample. These are mostly galaxies located in the vicinity of the Great Attractor region which are of fundamental importance for our science goals. We request four nights on each of the next four semesters to complete our program.
