Title: A Phoenix Variability Study of the He I 1.083 um Accretion/Outflow Signature in a 10 Myr T Tauri Star
Abstract:
We propose to use Phoenix on Gemini South to monitor the variability and
modulation of the He I 1.083 um spectral feature observed towards the
actively accreting, young Sun-like star, TW Hya. In previous spectroscopic
observations of TW Hya, this feature shows considerable structure possessing
both a blue-shifted component indicative of gas entrained in a fast moving,
outflowing wind and a red-shifted component associated with infalling gas.
The proposed observations will, for the first time, probe the modulation of
the structure and strength of this accretion/outflow signature and correlate
these variations with the rotational phase and changes in the mass accretion
rate, providing a necessary step toward discriminating between different
theoretical models that attempt to explain the outstanding stellar angular
momentum problem.
