Title: Thermal Emission from a Non-transiting Extrasolar Planet
Abstract:
We propose Phoenix spectroscopy of the planet-hosting system tau Boo. Our
target has the most favorable planet/star contrast of any bright (K < 6)
system, and our data reduction will use a combination of new techniques
designed to extract the faint planetary signal from the highly variable
background. These observations will measure or set the first constraints on
the thermal emission and atmospheric structure of this heretofore
uncharacterized planet, testing atmospheric models ofirradiated giant planets
in a surface-gravity regime neglected by current modeling efforts.
