Title: Photometric Calibration of Subaru Massive Cluster Survey Fields
Abstract:
Recent x-ray studies of galaxy clusters have produced strong
evidence for Dark Energy and tight constraints on cosmological
parameters. The dominant source of systematic uncertainties associated
with these methods is in the cluster masses deduced from x-ray
luminosities. The assumption of hydrostatic equilibrium that enables a
mass estimate has been shown not to be applicable in many of the most
massive clusters. To characterize systematic uncertainty and improve
the calibration of x-ray masses, we have assembled optical images of a
sample of massive clusters for which x-ray data is available and are
using weak lensing to measure the clusters' total masses. Our data
sample includes multi-band Subaru imaging of clusters in the MAssive
Cluster Survey (MACS) with complementary Chandra and Hubble Space
Telescope observations. Photometric calibration of the Subura images
has been partially completed with Subaru itself and with available Sloan
Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) measurements. But a number of the Subaru
fields remain uncalibrated. We propose to calibrate the photometry in
these fields using the 2.1m-telescope at Kitt Peak.
