Title: Type II Cepheids and Related Variables
Abstract:
While type II Cepheids have considerable potential to contribute to
our knowledge of a number of areas of astrophysics, their usefulness is
compromised by the relatively small number of such stars known. I have
undertaken a project to identify more of them in two large area sky
surveys, and to determine some of the basic properties of the stars
which are confirmed as type II Cepheids. In the course of this project
a significant number of small amplitude stars which appear to be closely
related to the type II Cepheids have been identified. The nature of
these objects is also being investigated. The photometry portion of the
project is complete and spectra were obtained for about half of the
stars with the GCAM spectrograph on the 2.1-m telescope. This proposal
requests time to obtain spectra for about 2/3 of the remaining stars.
