Title: Spectral classification of young UV-bright white dwarfs in the Galactic plane
Abstract:
We propose to observe UV-bright sources from the Sandage two-color
survey of the Galactic plane which were recently found to display
significant proper motions, and are now suspected to be hot, young white
dwarfs in the vicinity of the Sun. We will obtain spectra of all the
candidates, using the 2.1-meter and 4.0-meter telescopes on Kitt Peak.
Spectral classification will separate out the white dwarfs from the hot
subdwarfs, and identify possible cataclysmic variables in the sample.
Spectroscopic distances will be combined with the proper motions to
calculate the kinematics of the young degenerates, and evaluate their
membership with any of the local young, stellar associations.
