Title: Near-IR Imaging of the SDSS Deep Stripe

Abstract: We propose to carry out a wide-field infrared survey in the SDSS deep stripe area using NEWFIRM on the KP-4m. The SDSS deep stripe covers 270 deg^2, with ugriz imaging that reaches a depth of g~ 24.5 in over 30 epochs of SDSS data in a period of 8 years. This is one of the best studied area with wide-field deep optical imaging as well as supporting observations in radio and UV, extensive optical spectroscopy and proposed observations with Spitzer/mid-IR and ACT/mm. The NEWFIRM observations will cover J and K band to AB=22 (4-\sigma for point sources), maximizing the efficiency of photometric redshift determination and quasar/brown dwarf candidate selection. We will use the data to study the AGN population down to faint luminosities at 0< z < 6.5, and to probe stellar populations in galaxies at z~ 1. The wide area coverage also enables us to discover quasars at z>6.5 and brown dwarfs cooler than T. In addition, it provides a legacy dataset for explorations of AGNs, galaxies, cool stars and star formation. We propose J and K imaging of 50 deg^2 that covers the area with the deepest optical imaging, best existing spectroscopic data and maximum overlap with existing GALEX and proposed Spitzer surveys.
