Title: A kinematic survey of HI selected star forming galaxies
Abstract: Our understanding of extragalactic star formation has been hampered by selection biases and uncertainties in the conversion to total star formation rate. We have been addressing these issues using an \HI\ selected sample and observing with multiple tracers of star formation. Here we propose a kinematic survey of the same sample to address two additional issues that are effected by such biases: the dynamical basis of the star formation law, and the mass distribution within disk galaxies. We will obtain optical rotation curves of 35 galaxies with the WIYN 3.5m and the SparsePak Integral Field Unit fiber bundle. Previous surveys have concentrated on either bright spirals or low surface brightness dwarfs. By using a well selected sample of \HI\ selected galaxies we can derive volume densities and true incidence rates. This allows a quantifiable determination of the importance of observed phenomena (such as unstable disks or cuspy halos) that has not been possible with previous surveys.
