Title: FLAMINGOS Spectroscopy of Candidate EGRET Counterparts

Abstract: We propose to use FLAMINGOS on the KPNO 4-m telescope to obtain multi-object near-infrared spectroscopy in the fields of unidentified EGRET (gamma)-ray sources in the Galactic Plane, to identify direct counterparts and study the stellar population environments in the fields. Revealing the nature of the "unidentified EGRET sources" is one of the outstanding problems in high energy astrophysics for this decade. Members of the proposing team have identified 20 variable radio point sources in the positional error circles of 3 EGRET sources. We wish to obtain spectra of these objects, as well as surrounding field stars, in order to identify potential sources of the (gamma)-ray emission, rule out unlikely counterparts, and study the population of sources in these fields for unusual properties (e.g. clusters of massive stars, etc.). Due to their low Galactic latitude, high extinction is expected towards these objects, so infrared observations are necessary. We will use FLAMINGOS to obtain HK spectra of the possible IR counterparts to the variable radio sources, as well as ~ 1500 other field sources selected from the 2MASS and UKIDSS IR point source catalogs. These data will be important on their own, and also provide a critical resource in light of the upcoming launch of GLAST in Fall 2007.
