Title: Deep Imaging of Probable Nearby Young Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Abstract: We wish to obtain deep V and I imaging of a new sample of extremely low-metallicity blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies selected from the Data Release 5 (DR5) of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We aim to study the V-I colors of the underlying extended low-surface- brightness component of these galaxies and how they vary as a function of metallicity. The existing Sloan imaging data do not allow us to carry out these studies as they do not go deep enough. The deeper data will allow us to identify the BCDs with the bluest underlying component, those that are most likely to be young local galaxies. As many of the BCDs in our sample are nearby (their distances corrected for Virgocentric flow are less than 8 Mpc), the identification of these young galaxy candidates will yield an excellent sample for follow-up imaging studies with the Hubble Space Telescope. HST will be able to resolve their stellar populations and allow us to make more definite conclusions about their ages.
