Title: Constraining the Masses of Quasar Host Halos With ~60 Binary Systems

Abstract: Recent clustering-based measurements of UV-excess (UVX) quasars are converging on masses for quasars' host halos of 10^12-10^13 \rm h^-1M_\sun. We propose an independent measure of such masses based on the dynamics of quasar binaries with angular separations of 3''< (Delta)\theta<6'' (~18-35 h^-1 \rm kpc). Our target sample is 98 efficiently classified candidate pairs with well-controlled UVX selection; we show in our Experimental Design that 90% of these cases will be quasar pairs, and 60% of the pairs are true binaries. Spectroscopy of our candidate pairs will have two goals: (1) Sufficient wavelength coverage to obtain identifications and redshifts for all sampled quasars; and (2) enough resolution to usefully constrain velocity differences for quasar binaries. The first goal is important in providing a sample of scientifically rich quasar pairs for follow-up analyses, such as; background quasars tracing quasar hosts in absorption, imaging of massive merging galaxies, and testing whether there is excess quasar clustering on small scales. The second goal will provide a dynamical constraint on quasars' hosts' masses, testing whether UVX quasar binaries triggered in merging galaxies spawn typical UVX quasars, as suggested by some models of galaxy formation.
