Title: The First Astronomical Use of Silicon PIN Detectors
Abstract:
Silicon PIN array detectors combine a silicon light sensitive layer
of material and a silicon readout circuit connected through indium
bumps. We have made lab measurements using these devices in sizes up to
2Kx2K. The lab performance is impressive, surpassing CCDs for some
applications. In fact, the potential is so high that we are working
with several projects, including LSST and SNAP, to explore the
possibility of using this technology. We propose to make the first
validation of this technology in an astronomy application using the 2.1m
telescope. The potential science projects enabled by this development
are many. They include the search for the nature of both dark energy
and dark matter.
