Title: The Chemical History of the Monoceros Ring
Abstract: We propose to use Hydra on the WIYN telescope to observe candidate red giant members of the Monoceros Ring, in order to explore the chemical history of that star stream compared to other outer disk stars and clusters. The system has a well-defined radial velocity (Yanny et al. 2003, 2004) which we may compare to those derived for our target stars. By comparing the observed spectra with a large grid of synthetic spectra, we will also derive good estimates for gravity and chemical composition, including both [Fe/H] and [(alpha)/Fe]. If the Monoceros Ring is a merger event, we expect to discern unusual [(alpha)/Fe] vs.\ [Fe/H] behavior at the velocity of the structure.
