Title: Measuring the Optical Extragalactic Background by Utilizing the Schielding Effect of Dark Clouds

Abstract: The extragalactic background light (EBL) is the cumulative emission of pregalactic sources, protogalaxies, and galaxies as well as emission from more exotic processes. Observations of the optical EBL suffer from strong foregrounds, especially the terrestrial airglow and the zodiacal light. The shielding effect of dark clouds would provide a means of completely removing the foregrounds. Utilizing this effect, we performed a pilot observation to take B/I images of two dark clouds at galactic latitude b=20 deg, using the 40inch telescope at the Siding Spring Observatory. Our first results suggest an unexpectedly large EBL at the optical wavelengths. However, there are some issues to be answered before claiming the detection. These issues are related to the correlation between the optical and 100 (micron) brightness; we obtained the correlation weaker than expected. The weak correlation may be caused by biased sampling in a limited observed area (1 x 1 deg^2 for each cloud). Here we propose to do B/I imaging of two large areas (6 x 6 deg^2 each) by using the CCD Mosaic on the WIYN 0.9m telescope, in order to better understand the correlation.
