Title: Deep Probe for Mg Index and (B-V) colors at the North Galactic Pole
Abstract: A previous search for pure halo giants (and dwarfs) has yielded a number of faint giants in the direction of the NGP. This first search was made with the Mount Laguna Observatory 40-inch reflector. We used a simple method, measuring the MgH index (with interference filters centered at 4886\AA and 5130\AA with passbands of 186\AA and 154\AA respectively), as well as (B-V) colors. Spectra of suspected halo giants obtained with both the KPNO Hydra and HET show clear evidence of underabundance. We now wish to probe even farther into the Galactic halo, using the KPNO 2.1m, with which we can extend the search about 1.6 mag fainter and about twice as far in the z direction. Any giants found at magnitudes approaching the frame limit will be well into the ``pure" halo region. In this search we will use two filters of the ``Washington" system, which very nearly match the MLO filters. We will reobserve the same regions not only to insure compatability between the two sets of filters, but also to extend the search substantially further into the halo region.
