Title: Anomalously Large Lensing Signature in High Redshift Supernovae
Abstract: The brightness residuals of distant type Ia supernovae show a correlation with the foreground density of galaxies measured from APM plate scans. This appears to be the first detection of gravitational weak lensing of supernova light by large-scale structure and provides a probe of the dark matter distribution that complements lensing shear measured through galaxy shape. But the amplitude of this correlation is surprisingly large and can not be explained by standard models of mass distributions. We propose to employ deep, wide-field imaging to greatly improve the mapping of large-scale structure along the line-of-sight to ~80 published high-redshift type Ia supernovae. This program will provide the best possible sample to test the correlation and map structures at redshifts optimum for lensing. This proposal is to complete the imaging of the entire SNIa sample that will begin during the nights granted us in January 2006.
