Title: Near-Infrared Follow-up of High Redshift X-ray Clusters
Abstract: Clusters of galaxies provide an intimate view of galaxy evolution over a wide range in cosmic look-back time and environment. From a large Chandra/NOAO serendipitous survey, we have culled a high- confidence list of high redshift cluster candidates to facilitate the investigation of galaxy cluster evolution and provide strong constraints on cosmological parameters. We propose to use FLAMINGOS on the KPNO 4-m telescope to obtain deep near-IR imaging in the J- and K_s-band of 6 extended X-ray sources discovered serendipitously in Chandra images, but undetected in deep 4m/MOSAIC imaging. Our FLAMINGOS observations will measure cluster redshifts (out to z~ 1.5) using the location of the cluster red-sequence in the color-magnitude plane. Cluster attributes, such as the luminosity function, richness, color-magnitude relation, and correlations between near-IR and X-ray properties, will be measured and contrasted with our more local serendipitous sample. These observations promise to substantially increase the number of known high redshift galaxy clusters.
